Double barrel topwater frog

Posted by Steve Galea at

I was playing around with a sample product that I have just been given and I have to say I like it. The product is The Flymen Fishing Company's Surface Seaducer Double-barrel Popper and Slider body as well as the matching eyes and hook. I'm pretty sure I'll be stocking these things before bass season arrives. Let me know if this product appeals to you. I should note that I coloured the white head. The Clouser minnow: A stellar smallmouth bass fly

Posted by Steve Galea at

The Clouser minnow is a legendary fly that catches fish in salt- and freshwater. In my experience, it's particularly deadly when used for smallmouth bass. The colour combo shown above is just about as good as it gets in the waters in and around central Ontario.  The genius of this pattern is that it offers a sleek and lively minnow profile while riding hook point up so it can be worked among the boulders and drop offs and jigged deeper if need be. So simple and versatile, the Clouser is truly a work of fly design genius.

A nice afternoon of smallmouth fishing

It was the size of a small Rapala. Not bad for less than an hour of fishing time. Again, they were taking black beadhead woolly buggers fished...

A big bass day....

Posted by Steve Galea at

I had some free  time this afternoon, so I took the inflatable pontoon boat to a lake I hadn't fished since winter. Usually, this is where we catch our lake trout through the ice. This time I was looking for smallmouh bass. I caught four  in less than an hour and kept these two. All fish caught were more than two pounds. The bottom fish was 19 inches and weighed 4 pounds according to a good scale. The top fish was 18 and I guessed it to be 3 pounds. Both were caught on black woolly buggers with sinking line...

My favourite moments on the water

Posted by Steve Galea at

....always look like this these days. There is something about working hard for the fish you catch that makes angling seem even more worthwhile. Trolling from spot to spot, fishing the water with long casts and deep retrieves and feeling the hook up from a perch on an unobtrusive platform in the middle of a quiet lake, all these things add to the experience and make these summer days even more memorable.
