A streamer imitates a minnow and, on occasion, crayfish or leech imitation. Basically, these big flies can imitate anything that swims and is a mouthful. That's why they are known as the big fish flies.( Yet, in smaller sizes, they can also do double duty as nymph hooks.)
In either case, the hook must be rugged and the right length for the fly at hand. We all have our favourites, of course. Some streamers just seem to look better on certain irons. That's why, whenever you buy a new streamer hook, you should tie on your favourite streamer. Eventually, you'll soon find the perfect marriage of hook and material.
